Condo Interior Design

Condo Interior Design

Moving into a condo might feel like you’re losing some space, but one of the many benefits of condo living is that, having less rooms to maintain, means you can work on a great condo interior design over and over.

Lavish has been creating exciting spaces for people in Raleigh NC who want to live a lavish life. We love helping people feel proud of the spaces they inhabit. As you think about your own condo interior design we have some helpful thoughts to get your gears turning. And when you’re ready to implement these ideas, give us a call.

How to Decorate a Condo

Moving into a condo, while losing some space, affords you more opportunities for personal touch that seem out of reach when you have a garden, yard, garage, and multiple rooms to maintain.

Decorating your condo requires some thought. If you’re feeling stuck, ask yourselves these questions:

  • How do you primarily use your space?
  • Is the living room a space to unwind and watch TV or is it for guests to encourage conversation?
  • Do you cook often or order in more?
  • Are you one for throwing dinner parties with many guests?

All of these questions reveal the primary function of your spaces. When you know how your condo is being used, you’ll have a starting point to work with an interior designer on how to decorate a condo, no matter the size.

Condo Interior Design Ideas

Finding inspiration for your condo is a lot easier with the Internet. Websites like Pinterest and Apartment Therapy are great for condo interior design ideas that will give you a lot to work with. Use them to your advantage and come prepared to a meeting with a potential interior design firm in your area.

Furniture

Like good condo interior design, furniture should reflect both fashion and function. This is a bigger purchase. Modern condo design doesn’t need to be extremely trendy, and because of its cost it’s important to be sure that you’ll enjoy it for years to come. Often furniture is a focal point of a room, so choosing something that will work well with a lot of different pieces is smart.

Lighting

Sometimes all a room needs is some new light to bring it to life. Talk to your interior designer about how you can utilize your space with different lighting fixtures to nearly change the entire room. Additionally, you might consider how the natural light you already have flows with your layout and design.

Paint

Condo interior design firms will be able to help you with the right colors to match your aesthetic, but also keep your spaces vibrant. An expert can help you mix and match colors and neutrals to pull off whatever feeling you hope for.

Wallpaper

There has been a strong return of wallpaper into homes over the past several years. Don’t think of your parents wallpaper that feels out of date. New styles can range from tasteful and subtle to loud and vibrant. Whatever your style there is a wallpaper that can suit your space.

Examples of great wallpaper.

Art

A great piece of art not only makes your space unique, but is a great conversation starter. There can be personal meaning behind it or it can come from a local artist you love. Do you want one big piece or several smaller pieces? Is there a theme or style you like most? Art is a great way to have some fun with condo interior design.

Condo Interior Design Raleigh NC

You may be really excited to start your life in your condo, or perhaps you’re doing it because you just don’t need all that extra space anymore. Whatever your reason Lavish are experts and professionals of condo interior design. Our Raleigh NC showroom is a great place to gather inspiration and talk to one of our design professionals to help you transform your condo into something lavish that is as unique as you are.

Kitchen Renovation

Update Your Home with a Kitchen Renovation

Kitchen’s are a central hub in any household. It’s where you start your day with a cup of coffee, where you make a meal for family and loved ones, and it’s where you for that late night snack. It gets a lot of use so it’s no wonder that a kitchen renovation is high on homeowners’ priority list.

At Lavish we’ve been helping people in the Raleigh NC area renovate and remodel their homes for years. There’s a lot to think about when you are ready for a kitchen remodel. Let’s go over several key components of from kitchen renovation costs to a handy kitchen renovation checklist you can use.

Kitchen Renovation Costs

A kitchen renovation is more than just the cost of labor. According to data from Home Guide, the average kitchen remodel will cost homeowners somewhere between $100 and $250 per square foot. Depending on how much you plan to renovate and what type of renovations you want will shape the overall cost. There are a number of things that make up your total price tag. Let’s look at a few.

Cost of Materials

All of the things you want to change require materials and the type of changes you wish to make will, to varying degrees, affect the cost. For instance, painting and lighting will typically cost you less than replacing appliances and going for all new cabinetry.

The typical kitchen renovation can include:

  • Cabinetry
  • Appliances
  • Countertops
  • Lighting
  • Flooring
  • Painting
  • Windows
  • Plumbing

Tip: For things like tiling and paint, it’s wise to budget a little extra in case there are bumps along the way. Sometimes the tile you like may not be available anymore, so getting more ahead of time will save you the hassle when things don’t always go exactly as planned.

Labor

Kitchen renovation costs boil down to two main areas – parts and labor. We’ve talked a bit about parts, but just as important is the labor. Labor comes in many forms. You have an interior designer who will help you make your vision a reality. You’ll also work with a contractor who will carry out that vision. Many times working with an interior designer will satisfy both of these labor groups. At Lavish, we work with contractors in the Raleigh Durham area to build out a kitchen remodel you will love.

Labor costs will vary with the complexity of the work involved, detailing, and location. A good rule of thumb is to estimate that parts will account for two-thirds of the project cost and labor the other one-third.

Ways to Save

Tackling a big project might get you feeling nervous about the price tag, but if budget is a concern there are ways to save money.

  • Parts
Labor costs will vary slightly, but where you can really save is on parts. Rather than go with the top of the line cabinets or flooring, you can choose something that looks great, but uses non-premium materials.
  • Prebuilt vs Custom
Working with an interior designer has flexibility. You can have them customize every little detail if that is a priority to you. They can do great work with a blank slate. However, if you’re looking to save some money off the top you can have them use a prebuilt solution.
  • DIY
Obviously you’ll need a designer and a contractor to fully implement a kitchen renovation, but if there are little pieces you want to do yourself (i.e. demolition) you can save money.

Kitchen Renovation Checklist

Most people are going to search for inspiration and look at rough costs when they start their kitchen renovation journey. Truthfully there are a lot of things to think about before you begin the first day of the project.

Budget

The last thing on people’s minds is the first thing that should be addressed. We know money isn’t fun to think about but setting a realistic budget will be more freeing than restrictive. Not planning for expected and unexpected costs will make things more stressful down the road.

Design

Choosing an interior designer is a big step. They’ll be the ones listening to your ideas and helping you lay out the plan forward. Remember to ask good questions to know if you’re a good fit.

Some questions you might ask:

  • Do you have recent projects and references?
  • How involved will I be in the decision making?
  • How do you decide if we’re a good fit?
  • What contractors do you work with?

Build

When the time comes to start building out your project you want to be prepared ahead of time. At this point you should know if you need permits, what kind of tools you’ll need if you’re doing any of the work yourself, and materials purchased that will be incorporated in the kitchen renovation.

The same types of questions you asked the interior designer will be helpful with the contractor. Seeing their work and knowing how their past clients rate them will help you make an informed decision about who to hire.

Bathroom Renovation

Are you Ready for a Bathroom Renovation?

Making time for a bathroom renovation can be difficult. You’ve had the same wallpaper up for years and you always say you’re going to change it. Or maybe it’s the beating that the tub and sink have taken with all the kids use. There is always a long list of reasons we have for not looking up bathroom remodeling contractors in the area to make over the bathroom.

There are a lot of questions you may have about a bathroom remodel that prevent you from getting started, but hopefully we can help answer them for you in this article. At Lavish we are experts in interior renovations including bathroom renovation in Raleigh NC.

Bathroom Renovation Cost

Most people are intimidated by the idea of a home project for a couple of reasons. First they may not know the first thing about what goes into a bathroom remodel. Second, and probably more of a road block, is the uncertainty with a bathroom renovation cost.

Finances are definitely an important thing to consider. Long before you Google “bathroom remodel near me” it is wise to consider the cost. According to Home Advisor the average bathroom remodel cost in 2020 is $10,450, but many can cost as little as $3,500 in a small or medium sized bathroom.

As you can begin to guess there are a variety of factors that go into the cost of a renovation.

Cost of Materials

Depending on how much you plan to change will increase or decrease the total project costs. The actual materials used in renovating your space cost money, but if you have flexibility you may be able to find good deals on material costs.

Some material costs you can incur during a bathroom renovation project are:

  • Fixtures
  • Flooring
  • Doors and Windows
  • Painting
  • Plumbing
  • Lighting

Cost of Labor

Aside from material goods you’ll be hiring someone to do the bathroom remodel for you. Who you choose and why depends on a number of factors. Being budget conscious is important, but it’s sometimes worth considering the experience of an interior designer and contractor when making this decision. You may pay more for labor to get the peace of mind you’re after.

With a Raleigh bathroom remodel you can expect to pay around 50 percent of your budget on labor costs. These will go to the interior designer, contractors, plumbers, and electricians as needed. Some steps of the process can be done by you, such as demolition, if you want to save some money. However, you’ll want to hire professionals if you plan to do any kind of bathroom renovation project.

Permits

One often overlooked cost of a bathroom renovation is any building permit cost associated with your location. Requirements vary from city to city, so it’s important to do some research with your local government. Most of the time your contractor or interior designer will roll these costs into the price of the remodel. This is a good question to bring up when interviewing potential interior designers or contractors.

Expect to pay $300 or more for permits depending on the size of your project and your local governments regulations.

Saving Money

Ideally, you’d like to save some money if you’re taking on a bathroom renovation. If you’re creative there are a lot of ways you can do this, but here are some common places to begin.

  • Demo
As we mentioned earlier, doing some of the leg work yourself will save you money. Do your own demo work, it’ll cut costs and who doesn’t love to swing a hammer?
  • Prebuilt vs Custom
Sometimes you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. There are a lot of prebuilt solutions out there that will save money over going with something custom. You may find that there’s something you already like.
  • Use Recycled goods
Speaking of prebuilt, the ultimate way to go prebuilt is to use materials that need a second life. Second hand stores like Habitat for Humanity ReStores are great resources for lightly used sinks, tubs, and other materials.
  • Paint vs Tile
Prioritizing what you want to update in your bathroom remodel can help you save money where you might not expect it. For example, rather than expensive tiling, maybe all you need is a fresh paint job to bring new life to your space.

Hire an Interior Designer

Hire an Interior Designer: What You Need to Know

The very fact that you’ve found this page means you’ve been toying with the idea of hiring an interior designer. But maybe that feels foreign to you. It’s a big investment, we get it, and it can feel scary to make such a big decision without much research.

Well you’re in the right place.

As interior designers we know all the things people search for when they are thinking about starting an interior design project. “How to find an interior designer”, “What to know before hiring an interior designer”, “Hire an interior designer near me”. We’ve seen it all and it got us thinking we should help our potential clients wrap their head around the process.

So here are some things you should think through and do when you hire an interior designer.

Before You Begin

There’s a lot to work through long before any contracts are signed. These are things you’ll want to consider before you begin your search for an interior designer. Take sometime to figure out these 3 things:

  1. Finances
This is a big one that will set the tone for the rest of your project. Remember to be realistic with your budget so you don’t pay more in the long run. A good rule of thumb is to add 10-15% to your budget for any unexpected costs.
  2. Personal Style
Surprisingly this is often overlooked when considering home renovation or remodeling. You may have vague ideas of what you want, but the more you can express your vision to a designer, the more likely you are to be happy with the outcome.
  3. Timeline
The simple answer would be the sooner the better, but it’s helpful to have a timeline in mind with the designer that coordinates with your schedule. Will you be on vacation? Will the kids be home a lot during this time or would it be better to wait until there is less commotion at home?

Ask, Ask, Ask

Now that you’ve done the work of thinking about how your own lifestyle fits into the equation, it’s time to think about what to look for when you want to hire an interior designer.

  • Previous Work
One of the first places to start is asking to see previous projects that a design team has completed. You’ll get a sense of their style and see how it fits with yours. Visualize how their past work might fit into your space. You can see our projects here.
  • References
Just as employers ask candidates for references, you should do the same with potential designers. If they’ve done good work they’ll have references to match. Ask if they could refer you to previous clients who’d be willing to recommend them. Also check their website for client testimonials.
  • Training
We know that training isn’t the only criteria of talented designer, but it can be a good place to see where they got their education from. They may be continuing to learn post school as well. Again a website is a good place to find this information as well.
  • Mistakes and how you learned
It might sound funny to ask an interior designer about mistakes they’ve made, but it will be an incredibly insightful question. No contractor is perfect, and if they tell you they are, run. However, a good contractor will be honest about the mistakes they’ve made and how they’ve strived to learn from them. It makes for a good conversation that will really let you know who you’re hiring.

Stay Connected

As the process moves out whether or not you want to make a lot of decisions or allow the designer to be fully in control, make sure you’re staying connected with the team. You don’t need to check in every single day, but you should try to have regularly scheduled project meetings to get a sense of how the project is coming along and any issues that may be arising.

Ready to Hire an Interior Designer?

We hope that this handy little guide helps remove some of the mystery about how to find an interior designer. The best thing you can do is be prepared, so if you consider what we’ve laid out in this article you’ll be in good shape.

Your home is a reflection of your creativity and personality. That can seem scary and make you afraid to hire an interior designer until you have everything perfect, but it doesn’t have to be scary. With the right questions and preparation your home renovation or room remodel will fly by and you’ll end up with a space that works for you.

If you have any questions or you’re ready to take the plunge, contact us and we’d be happy to talk.

Happy designing!

Home Renovation

Home Renovation Guide: Getting Started

You’re here because you’re thinking about or planning to start a home renovation. But perhaps like many people, you’re not sure where to begin. We get it, home renovation can be both exciting and scary. However, with some proper planning it doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

Below are some essential tips and advice whether you’re just dipping your toes in the water or are ready to take the plunge into home renovations. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email or call us.

What Are Your Reasons?

The very first thing you should do is consider your reasons for wanting to renovate your home. Watching enough HGTV will spark anyone’s desire to work on their home, but before you make any big decisions reflect on why you want to start a home renovation project?

Some possible reasons to renovate:

  • Add property value to your home
If you’d like to add property value to your home, renovation is a surefire way to add value that you get to enjoy in the process.
  • The functionality no longer works for you
Maybe you used a space a certain way while your kids were younger that was more suited to the needs of little ones. Updating your space can add new life to your home while serving the needs of your family better.
  • Updating some major appliances
Home renovation may have not been on your mind initially, but when needing to buy new major appliances it might make sense for you to take this time to revamp the space to match the new appliances.

Let’s Talk About Money

More than anything, thinking about money is the least fun part of a home renovation project. It is however a make or break consideration and one that should not be taken lightly. Any good, renovating a house, checklist will include finances, so we think it’s important too.

According to the folks at Finance Superhero, “A wise rule of thumb when planning a renovation budget lies in estimating total project costs and adding 15-20%.” When you’re thinking about how much you want to budget, tack on that additional percent and determine if it’s something you can afford.

We know you’re not going to want to hear this, but be realistic about how much you can afford. Financing big projects like this with credit cards might seem tempting, but think about the high payments that can occur if the balances are not paid off in a timely fashion.

Look at your finances, find your budget, tack on 15-20% and be diligent about planning properly so you don’t incur additional expenses that will cause problems down the road. We specialize in home renovations in Raleigh NC, but don’t let that stop you from reaching out to us if you have further questions.

Do Your Research

Everything we’ve discussed so far in this home renovation guide has been focused inward on your own reasons and financial ability for starting a renovation project. Now we want to talk about the research you should do as you look for an interior designer and contractor.

Unless you’re a designer or contractor yourself, you will need to hire someone to help bring your ideas to life. Since they will be a big part of the renovation, you will want to take finding the right person seriously.

The first place to start is with your own network of friends, family, and neighbors. Asking for recommendations can be one of the easiest ways to find an interior designer you trust. Other places to look are Google and Yelp. You’ll find reviews and contact information for many different designers and contractors.

But don’t let it stop there. Take some time getting to know the person or team you might hire. Ask questions about budget, their past work, and even how many projects they are currently taking on. If they’re extremely busy it might be harder for your project to complete in the timeline you hope for. Asking questions is the only way you’ll get to know if you and your interior designer or contractor are the right fit.

Avoid These Mistakes

Maybe the best advice we can give you is what not to do when you’re renovating your house. Let the mistakes of others help you know how to make your project have less hassle and less worry.

  • No plan
By now it should be clear that having a plan and thinking through not just the materials but the reasons for renovation are vital in a successful home renovation.
  • Going over budget
Setting a budget is important, accounting for unexpected issues is necessary, but ultimately being honest about what you can afford will help you to feel more not less free as the project unfolds
  • Cheaper doesn’t equal better – designers / materials
Everybody loves a good deal, but cheaper does not always equal better. You may find some deals on materials, but do your research. Cheaper materials may cause problems later. Cheaper designers and contractors may not have the experience you need. We’re all about saving money, but make sure that you’re still getting a good product and not sacrificing quality.
  • Lured by trends
We love a good trend, but the more trendy you make your kitchen the sooner you’ll need to replace it with something more current or timeless. There’s nothing wrong with following trends, but if you want to be trendy, maybe choose accents or inexpensive items to account for their likely faster than average turnover.
  • Ordering just enough
In the same way that it is recommended to add 10-15% to your budget, order more than you need in materials. Materials can break and you may need extra for special corners in certain areas. You can alway return unopened boxes as needed.

Ready to Get Started?

As you can see, there is a lot to think about when preparing for a home renovation, but hopefully this home renovation guide was helpful for you. We’re specialists at home renovations in Raleigh NC, but even if you’re not in the area, reach out to us and let us help you make your home lavish. Stop by our studio or give us a call to learn more about how we can help! Happy renovating!

Living Room Design

Living Room Design: Tips for Designing Your Space

Living rooms are some of the most frequently used spaces in the house. You’ll entertain guests, watch films, have lively or intimate discussions, and many other memorable moments in this room. If you’re looking for living room inspiration you can browse through our galleries on our interior design page.

To further assist your next project, we have put together a non-exhaustive list of some important tips to help you get started.

Have a Plan

Like any good project, it’s important to have a blueprint for how you will design your space. It’s tempting to rush out and buy a new piece of furniture, but without proper planning you may box yourself into design corner that you don’t want to be in.

Having a plan means:

  • Knowing the measurements of your room
  • Understanding how the space will be used
  • Having a budget in mind
  • Keeping an inventory of pieces you’ll keep and those you’ll toss

Less is More

One of the most common mistakes people make when thinking about how to decorate a living room is overcrowding. A cluttered room with many pieces can be overwhelming for your guests and stressful for you. Consider the size of your space and allow your room and guests to breathe.

Know How You Will Use the Space

It’s easy to get excited about adding new pieces of furniture or choosing the right paint color. However, before you purchase anything thinking about exactly what you’ll be using the space for.

Will you be throwing parties? You will want plenty of seating for guests.

Are you a family who likes to watch films? Think about the space you’ll need for the television you own.

How you envision your living room being used will give you a head start on the perfect living room design for your home.

Never Underestimate Lighting

The amount and type of light can make or break a room. If you’re working with big windows and a lot of natural light, you may not need to invest in as many lighting options. However, if your space doesn’t have many windows and a lot of shading, make sure you accentuate your design with lighting that is both beautiful and functional.

Knowing how much light your space receives can affect many aspects of interior design. From the type of lighting you use to the color palette you choose make sure you aren’t underestimating the lighting.

Keep Going!

Living room design doesn’t have to stop after you’ve painted the last wall and plugged in that last lamp. There is no shortage of places both online and in nature to find new living room decor ideas. You don’t have to completely overhaul your living spaces every time you want a new look. The joy of interior design is that you can constantly be keeping an eye out for new pieces and accents that will spark new life into your room.

Not all interior designers operate the same way. Some charge for their services with a fixed rate depending on the type of project. Others will charge an hourly rate and quote you based on how many hours are anticipated.

Determining your budget is the first step to help you know where to begin your search. If you don’t know how much you can afford and are willing to spend you’ll end up losing track of how this project fits into your finances.

Recommendations

A trusted friend or business connection is invaluable when you want to feel safe in your choice for an interior designer. The recommendations of people close to you, help give you a behind the scenes look at the working relationship between designer and client.

You could google “interior design firms near me” and hope for the best or you could ask around and get the recommendation of someone you already trust. If they have already had a good experience then chances are you’ll benefit from the interior designer’s services as well.

You might also dodge a bullet, if you learn ahead of time to steer clear of certain designers who have a negative reputation, according to those in your network.

Ask around and you just might find out who the best interior design firms are and discover who to hire.

Transparency

We’ve all been there. A contractor promises to deliver more than they can reasonably handle or have the skill set to accomplish and we’re the ones who suffer. The best top residential interior design firms are more often than not transparent. You shouldn’t have to wonder what their process is like and how they will manage your money and time.

When you meet with a potential designer, it’s important for you to ask a lot of questions. Get to know who they are, what their credentials are, and how they will work to achieve the best result possible. Chances are in that conversation, you’ll get to know how transparent a designer is.

The more transparent a designer, the more likely you are to trust them.

Experience and Expertise

While experience isn’t the end all be all, it’s important to get a feel for the kinds of projects a potential interior designer has worked on. You may find that someone with a lot of experience doesn’t have the type of work you’re looking for, in that case, would you consider looking at commercial interior design firms who have added experience outside of residential homes? This and other questions will help you narrow down your search.

You may also want to discover what kinds of credentials and associations that a designer has to help in determining if you would want to work with that particular one.

How Do You Choose Interior Design Firms in Raleigh?

Hopefully after you have had the chance to talk to a number of designers in your area your choice will become clear. The truth is you may not hit every single target on this list, but your ideal designer should be someone that has a balance of at least a few of these items. When you choose between different interior design firms, prioritize what matters most to you on this list be it budget, transparency, or experience and make a choice that reflects those priorities.

At Lavish, we pride ourselves in helping you define your vision and bring it to life, resulting in a stunning environment that inspires you every day. We hope this guide has been helpful and that you’ll consider our experience and expertise when you plan your next project!

Interior Design Wake Forest NC

Where do I go for interior design in Wake Forest NC?

Whether you’re a long time resident or new arrival to Wake Forest NC, it can be hard to know what designers will be right for you. If interior design is not something you’re comfortable with how do you know what to expect from interior designers?

Here are 5 things to consider when deciding on interior design in Wake Forest NC.

1. Know What You Want

We know it sounds silly, but have you taken time to know what you want?

Nobody is expecting you to be a professional interior designer. You don’t know have to pretend you know it all, but the process will be more smooth the more prepared you are. Having some interior design ideas for living rooms, kitchens or whichever room you want to update, even if they aren’t implemented entirely, just having a bit of preparation will help you and your designer know your style and vision.

2. Compare, Compare, Compare

You have the internet at your fingertips. Compare the competition.

The Internet isn’t just for YouTube videos and funny pictures. Google can be your friend. There are many interior designers out there and the good ones will have portfolios for you to compare. It’s unlikely when you’re looking for interior design in Wake Forest NC that you’ll choose immediately. Use the tools at your disposal to learn about the differences between interior design packages and services offered at each company.

3. Know Your Budget

It might feel uncomfortable at first, but come with a realistic budget.

Money is everyone’s least favorite subject when it comes to planning for a home project. However, knowing your budget will actually help you make better decisions. When you know what you can afford and what you’re willing to spend you can make decisions more easily. Not only will you find a designer that fits your budget, but you’ll know elements you can live without.
Not all designers bill you the same way. Ask how and when you’ll be billed when signing up for a new project to see if it works with your budget.

4. Get Comfortable With Your Designer

You’re going to be working a lot with them. Better to find one you like.

Whoever you end up choosing know that you will be interacting a lot as you collaborate on the project. Spend a little time getting to know the designer before you commit to working with him or her. Ask questions about their process. Have them show you examples of their previous work.\

The more you know your interior designers ahead of time, the more likely you are to find someone you feel you can comfortably communicate with. When it comes to your home you want someone who understands your vision or someone you can trust to translate your ideas.

5. Follow Your Gut

It’s usually right.

You’ve followed all these tips. You know what you want, compared designers, and are confident about your budget, but you’re still not quite sure who to go with. How do you make the best choice for interior design? Sometimes it’s best to follow your gut. Which firm speaks to you? Who did you get along with and most trust to carry out your vision? If you feel like there are still a lot of great options, go with the designer that feels right.
